When you reach a certain age it is time to hang up your working gloves and that is what retirement is all about. Some people only semi-retire though and still put in a number of working hours from time to time.

The general concensus is to retire when you reach the age where you are eligble for private or public pension benefits. In some instances however these retirements are not voluntary, but rather based on a physical condition, brought on either by illness or accident, which results in the retirement. In a couple of instances it might also be the result of legislation concerning their position.

The idea of retiring has only been around over the past two centuries. Previously life expectancy was much lower, so most of the times people worked until the time of their deaths. Things just grew from there and most developed countries have pensions that they provide for those who retire in old age. In some instances these are sponsored purely by the state and in other instances employers also contribute. In poorer countries the elderly are less fortunrate as they then become dependant in full on their families for support.

The retirement with a pension is a result of many years of hard struggle through hard ideological, political, cultural and social barries in many societies. It has however progressed so far that it is also now part of the national constitutions of many western countries, which turns it into a right rather than a privilege.
